I still have this old puppy, which is still a very capable machine actually - but you have to accept that it may not be the most reliable way to run Pro Tools. The symptoms you describe in your first post tend to confirm that these macs cannot be trusted 100% to properly run Pro Tools, which is understandable, being 10+ y.o machines running an incompatible OS to begin with, as I had exactly the same symptoms on mine. In fact I replaced the video engine in the 12.7.1 package with the one from 12.4. Mine worked fine with 12.4 and 10.11.6, 12.7.1 was unusable. The fact that it works with 12.7.1 and Yosemite is a coincidence. This Mac runs perfectly fine but I had nothing but problems with the video engine. I have a Mac Pro 1,1 (2,1 with upgraded CPUs) with El Capitan on it.
